Elevate Your Shower Design with a Feature Strip
Share
You want a unique shower. Who doesnt!? You have to look at it every day. Well, whether you have a big budget or a small one, a tile feature strip can be a great option to up your design game from basic hotel bathroom, to something beautiful and uniquely yours.
How to Implement a Feature Strip!
If you want a feature strip that 'pops', start by selecting a more basic tile for the majority of the area. Tile setters call this the 'field' tile. This could be a neutral colour that serves as the backdrop. A 12"x24" or larger tile is a great option. (You could use a smaller tile, like a 3"x6" subway tile, but you'll have more grout lines and you could run the risk of having a design that looks 'busy') Now, the fun part, choose from an endless variety of tile to use as a feature strip! take samples of your field tile and your prospective feature tile to compare. Contrast or complement. Make it your own! Do you have a tiled shower floor? Often a smaller tile is used on the floor to help with the slope to the drain, consider using this same tile for your feature strip! As an added tip; use this same tile as the back of your niche too if you have one.
Now that you’ve chosen a tile, where should it go? Consider running the feature strip either vertically or horizontally along the shower wall. If you choose to run it horizontally, our suggestion is to put it at eye level. If your shower includes a niche, consider aligning the feature strip with the niche or even making it the same width. If you want your feature strip to really pop consider using a different grout colour exclusively for the strip. Another detail you can consider is a metal trim edge to bookend either side of the strip. You can even choose a trim that matches your plumbing fixtures or shower shelf to add to a cohesive look.
Ultimately, Why Should You Choose to Use One?
For one thing, by using a feature strip in your shower design you can achieve a custom look without the added material and installation cost of intricate tile patterns like herringbone or chevron. All tile installers charge much more for complex patterns and designs, making a feature strip a budget-friendly alternative. Not worried about the cost? Id still consider it or alternatively, an entire feature wall. (But thats another conversation.)
Not only does the feature strip add visual interest to your shower, it also allows you to personalize the space to suit your style. Whether you prefer a bold contrast or a subtle accent, the feature strip can be customized to reflect your aesthetic preferences.
Overall, this design idea offers a creative and cost-effective way to make your shower one of a kind.
